Brass Inlay in Wooden Handicrafts: What It Is and Where to Find It

What brass inlay is, why it pairs so well with sheesham, and the Sillanwali pieces that feature it, with simple care tips.

Some of the most eye-catching pieces in our workshop combine two materials: the warm brown of sheesham and the gold shine of brass. Brass inlay adds a touch of elegance to everyday objects, from coasters to serving pieces, and catches the light beautifully on a table.

What is brass inlay?

Inlay means setting one material into another so the surface stays smooth. In brass inlay, the craftsman cuts a recess into the wood in the shape of the design, such as a star, a line or a band, and fits brass into it. Once finished, the brass sits flush with the wood, forming part of the surface rather than sitting on top of it.

It's careful, precise work. The recess must match the brass closely, or gaps will show.

Why brass and sheesham pair so well

  • Contrast: the gold of brass stands out against sheesham's deep brown grain.
  • Durability: both materials are hard-wearing, so inlaid pieces are made for use, not just display.
  • Warmth: brass and wood both have warm tones, so the pairing feels natural rather than flashy.
  • Tradition: brass and wood are a classic combination in South Asian craft.

Brass accents on other pieces

Some pieces use brass as a fitting rather than inlay, which gives a similar warm detail:

  • Hand-Carved Premium Wooden Jewellery Box Set: three carved sheesham boxes with brass clasps.
  • Wooden Dry Fruit Box with Glass Lid, 4 Parts: a round sheesham box with four compartments, a glass lid and a brass knob.

Styling brass and wood

  • Keep to one metal. Brass looks best when it isn't competing with silver or chrome nearby.
  • Pair with plain wood. Brass-inlaid pieces stand out beside plain sheesham items like a serving tray set.
  • Use warm lighting. Soft, warm light brings out the glow of brass in the evening.
  • Build a tea table. The brass-inlay coasters, cake stand and dry fruit box make a coordinated set for guests.

Caring for brass-inlaid pieces

  • Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after use.
  • Don't soak the pieces or put them in a dishwasher, because water can harm the wood around the inlay.
  • Dry any spills straight away, especially near the brass edges.
  • Brass can darken naturally over time. Many people like this softer, aged look. If you prefer more shine, buff the brass gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid getting harsh metal cleaners on the wood.
  • Keep pieces away from heaters and long hours of direct sunlight.

Gifting brass and wood

Brass-inlaid pieces feel special without being fragile, which makes them popular for weddings, Eid and housewarmings. The coaster set is a thoughtful small gift; the cake stand or hot pot makes a bigger impression. See our wedding and nikkah gift guide for more ideas.
