Handmade Wooden Jars and Storage Pieces for the Home
Naqshi lacquer jars, a heritage chati and sheesham storage boxes, all handmade by Sillanwali Handicrafts, with tips on choosing and displaying them.
Storage doesn't have to be hidden. A beautiful lidded jar or box can sit on a shelf, a dining table or a console and become part of the décor, while still holding sweets, dry fruit or small household things. At Sillanwali Handicrafts we make jars and storage pieces in naqshi lacquer, hand-painted lac and plain sheesham.
Decorative lacquer jars
These are made for display first, with lids that also make them useful.

A heritage piece
Heritage Naqshi Chati, Lidded Wooden Storage Jar: a hand-worked naqshi chati in blue, pink and gold lacquer, with its lid, plate and stand. It carries the densest lacquer work our workshop makes, and is best treated as a centrepiece.

How to choose
- For display: the landscape jars, the Kalima jars or the blue table and jars set.
- For a statement centrepiece: the heritage naqshi chati.
- For daily kitchen use: the six-box set with tray.
- For serving guests: the four-part dry fruit box.
Think about where the piece will sit. Painted and lacquer jars suit drawing rooms and consoles. Sheesham boxes with clear lids suit kitchens and dining tables.
Display ideas
- Group in threes. The landscape jar set works well in a line on a shelf, from tall to short.
- Pair with matching colours. The blue table and jars look good beside other blue naqshi pieces, like the blue naqshi round table.
- Give a centrepiece space. Place the chati on its own, where its detail can be seen.
- Mix with other naqshi décor, such as a decorative lacquer urn.
Care tips
- Dust lacquer and painted jars with a soft, dry cloth.
- Keep them away from water and long hours of direct sunlight.
- Wipe sheesham boxes with a dry or slightly damp cloth, then dry them.
- Don't soak wooden pieces or put them in a dishwasher.
