About this piece
Roti Maker — hinged wooden press for flattening dough, in two sizes. Made by hand from sheesham (rosewood) and plainly polished, in the Sillanwali Handicrafts workshop in Sillanwali, Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan. It comes in 2 sizes: 10 inch (10 inch circle, 2 inch width, 12 inch handle) at PKR 2,750 and 12 inch (12 inch circle, 3 inch width, 14 inch handle) at PKR 3,750. It is ready to ship and delivered within 3 to 4 days anywhere in Pakistan, paid in cash on delivery.
A hinged wooden press that flattens a ball of dough into an even roti in one push. Made in two sizes: a 10 inch press for everyday rotis and chapatis, and a 12 inch press for larger rotis and a bigger household. 10 inch — a 10 inch circle, 2 inches wide, with a 12 inch handle. PKR 2,750. 12 inch — a 12 inch circle, 3 inches wide, with a 14 inch handle. PKR 3,750. Two discs of solid sheesham on a hinge, worked flat and true so they meet across their whole face — which is the only thing that matters in a press. If the discs are even slightly out, the roti comes out thick on one edge and thin on the other and cooks unevenly on the tawa. Wood gives a fraction under pressure where metal does not, so the dough spreads rather than being crushed, and it releases cleanly from a wooden face in a way it does not from steel. The longer handle on the 12 inch press gives the extra leverage a wider roti needs. It is faster than a belan and far more even, which is the argument for it in a kitchen making roti twice a day. Dust the faces with flour before each press. The rotis in the photographs are not included. Made in Sillanwali, Sargodha, and worked individually, so grain and colour vary between presses. Wash by hand in warm water and dry it straight away rather than leaving it to soak, and rub in a little food-safe oil now and then to keep the wood from drying out. Never put it in a dishwasher.
Every piece is made by hand, so the wood grain, carving and colour vary a little from the photo. That variation is normal and is what makes each one its own.

Care
- Wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not soak, do not put in a dishwasher, and do not leave standing in water.
- Keep the piece out of direct sunlight and standing heat so the wood does not dry or fade.
- A light food-safe mineral oil once or twice a year keeps plain serving pieces from drying out.
- Small variations in grain, carving depth and colour are normal — each piece is finished by hand in Sillanwali.
