About this piece
Chapati Tong — wooden chimta for turning roti. Made by hand from sheesham (rosewood) and plainly polished, in the Sillanwali Handicrafts workshop in Sillanwali, Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan. It measures 11 in long. It costs PKR 850. It is ready to ship and delivered within 3 to 4 days anywhere in Pakistan, paid in cash on delivery.
A wooden chimta for turning roti on the tawa and lifting it clear of the flame. Eleven inches long. It is cut from a single piece of sheesham with the pivot worked into the wood itself, so there is no rivet to work loose and no join to trap dough. The arms are sanded smooth and left unfinished. The reason to use wood rather than a steel chimta is simple: it does not conduct heat, so the handle stays cool in your hand however long the tawa has been on, and it will not scratch a non-stick surface. It is a daily tool rather than a display piece, and at this length it keeps your hand well back from the heat. Made in Sillanwali, Sargodha. Wash by hand in warm water and dry it straight away rather than leaving it to soak, and rub in a little food-safe oil occasionally so the wood does not dry and split. Never put it in a dishwasher. It is usually bought alongside the chakla belan and the roti maker as a set for a new kitchen.
Every piece is made by hand, so the wood grain, carving and colour vary a little from the photo. That variation is normal and is what makes each one its own.

Care
- Wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not soak, do not put in a dishwasher, and do not leave standing in water.
- Keep the piece out of direct sunlight and standing heat so the wood does not dry or fade.
- A light food-safe mineral oil once or twice a year keeps plain serving pieces from drying out.
- Small variations in grain, carving depth and colour are normal — each piece is finished by hand in Sillanwali.
