Can You Get a Name or Date Worked into a Lacquer Box Lid?
The Fancy Lacquer Box can have a name or date worked into its lid on request. What to put on it, what it can hold, and how to ask for one.

Short answer: yes. On request, a name or a date can be worked into the lid of Sillanwali's Fancy Lacquer Box, a round lidded sheesham box covered in dense hand-cut naqshi. Each lid's medallion is cut individually, so no two are the same, which makes a personalised box a one-of-one keepsake. The box costs PKR 3,200.
What can be added to the lid?
The product page says a name or a date can be worked into the lid on request. Our custom orders page also invites you to tell the workshop what you need, including a name.
Because every box is cut by hand, details such as the exact wording, layout and timing are best agreed directly with the workshop. Send your request through the custom orders page and the team will confirm what can be done.
What occasions suit a name or a date?
- A nikkah or wedding date, as a gift for the couple.
- A new baby's name.
- An anniversary date.
- A graduation or another milestone.
For more ideas, see our wedding and nikkah gift guide.
What would it hold?
The page says it holds rings, a tasbeeh, dry fruit or mithai. It is also often bought simply to sit out on a shelf, because at this level of work the box itself is the object.
Why is every lid different already?
The box is turned in one piece and covered edge to edge in the densest scratchwork the workshop does: bands of pattern around the body and a worked medallion filling the lid. On a plain piece, the artisan leaves ground between the lines. Here there is almost none, so a slip anywhere shows, and the piece cannot be corrected, only started again.
The lid is turned to seat flush, and the pattern is set out so it continues across the join. Each lid is cut individually, so no two carry the same medallion. Read more in our guide to naqshi lacquer work.
Which colour should you choose?
The box is made in teal and in red. Choose the one that suits the person or the room where it will sit.
How do you look after a keepsake box?
- Dust with a soft, dry cloth.
- Keep water, chemical cleaners and polish sprays off the lac.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight so the colour stays true.
